Dior Couture

A few looks from Christian Dior's Fall 2009 Haute Couture Collection.....

And I LOVE them.

I know this collection has been criticized for lack of innovation, but I adore the use of sheer fabrics and visible underpinnings. Perfect seaming, light adornment.
Pure Eye Candy.

Presto Changeo

With a full day off of work I was able to begin and complete my dresser project. Luckily for me, the weather was incredible and I get to spend the majority of the day outside.

Remember the photo of the dresser from my previous post...

Yeah, nothing special, but it is a functional piece that works well in my space. I have always loved "rustic" looking furniture, but it seems impossible to stumble upon and unfortunately I am not willing to pay the high prices at places like Anthropologie. I really became inspired in Central America by the wonderful colors used on buildings and furniture. The colors combined with a slightly worn feel was exactly what I was going for.

I started off by sanding off the thick layer of polyurethane to get the texture ready for painting.

I opted out of a primer as I wanted the old wood color to eventually come through. Two coats of latex interior paint in "Fresh Mist" did the job just fine.

After all was dry, I began to "distress" the paint job by running sand paper over the corners and edges. This allowed wood to come through and offered a great contrast to the bright new paint. I used a satin finished paint, and I admit, I think it would have been better to use and eggshell or flat paint. I think the satin will hold up better over time, but it wasn't as easy to strip away.

To top everything off, I found these great knobs on Etsy

...And Presto! Finished!

A Few Simple Projects

I have a few small projects I have been meaning to tackle as of late, and I've let the fantastic weather we've been having be my inspiration to actually work on them.

The first one involves some gorgeous woven Jaspé I purchased on a recent trip to Guatemala. As soon as I saw this piece in the market, I knew I wanted it for a lightweight bed cover.

I wanted to keep it simple as the intricate weaving itself is what is on show. For this simple project I simply cut two lengths of fabric and fastened them together using a durable Flat Felled Seam. I finished the edges with a blue velvet ribbon and some tiny rick rack trim.

Et, Viola! Finished!

Next Up: Resurfacing this hum-drum lingerie chest!

Bienvenue!

Welcome to the inauguration of my blog, "What I Consider Vital"!

The idea to create this blog was born out of the need for organization, as much as expression. With this format I hope to document my burgeoning clothing and accessories line. Trying to balance my creative, financial and personal lives, while remaining committed to quality of product and life, as well as represent a few of the things I hold dear in this world; Constant Creativity, Music and Travel.

You can expect to see my work displayed in finality and production, as well as my ideas and inspirations. I will write about the basics of starting and running a small business, building my dream studio and small personal projects I am working on along the way.

As new online relationships are forged, I will always welcome respectful comments and suggestions. I look forward to hearing from you!
